Did you all have to take typing classes back in elementary and middle school? I remember practicing typing on old Apple IIe's and honest to god typewriters.

I was wondering today if kids still have to take typing classes. I feel like kids must be exposed to computers at such an early age these days that teaching kids to type might be kind of pointless.

If there are any middle school readers of my LJ, time to chime in.

I have a LJ (hey thanks for reading), but I also have a blog (http://blog.traditionalcake.org/). Why the two? I tend to post public things that I want Google to find on my blog. I tend to post silly things that really don't deserve a wider audience on my LJ. I've had the LJ since like freshman year of college (oh drama) and the blog for a little over a year (oh Web 2.0).

I mention this only because if you are interested in what I'm up to you, you should read them both. If you are a http://www.google.com/reader addict like me, it's super easy to add the RSS feed for both. Ok, carry on.

I'm not going to lie. There was frosting (red cream cheese) on my umbrella this morning. That's all I'm going to say about that.

Mark Wahlberg and Ludacris are both in the new movie Max Payne, a video-game adaptation. The following snippet from their interview with the Onion AV Club made me laugh. To give you some context, Mark Wahlberg apparently had no idea of the long, storied history video-game to movie adaptations.

MarkW: Can you tell me a little bit about the history of videogames in the movies?
Ludacris: Not successful. Not good.
AVC: There's been a million of them. Mortal Kombat, Super Mario Brothers, all those Uwe Boll films.
Ludacris: Lara Croft.
MarkW: Doom.
Ludacris: Street Fighter. Oh, man, that was definitely a bomb.
AVC: None of them work out.
Ludacris: Well it looks like we're going to change that.

I love the optimism, Ludacris, and Mark? You need to fire your agent.

With all this talk about running and exercise and what not, I should probably mention my recent milestone.

As you probably know (because I complain about it all the time!), I tore my ACL playing ultimate frisbee a little over a year ago. I had surgery to fix my ACL on Sept. 11 of last year. I'm coming up on the 1-year mark and I'm proud to say that I'm officially back on the field, running, jumping, and no doubt destroying some other important body part.

I played in my first official game of Ultimate a couple weeks ago and even played a few points in the B-Pool finals where my team Genghis Khan Wild showed their mettle and came out on top as B-Pool champs.

I try to go to the gym at least three times a week for biking, running, pylometrics, and weights. When I skip the gym for even a few days, my knee and hamstring start to feel tight and uncomfortable, so the time spent in the gym seems worth it.

I even did an honest-to-gosh track workout last night with some people from my team. I actually managed to keep up for the most part, which I was kind of surprised by. For our track workout we did:

1) Half mile warm up.
2) Jog 100m then run hard for 100m for 8 repitions
3) Pylometrics
4) Timed 400m + untimed 400m
5) 50 m shuttle sprints
6) 30m, 60m, 100m increasing interval sprints
7) More 50 m shuttle sprints

Whoa my legs are feeling it today. In case it's not clear, the focus here is definitely on speed, quickness, and agility; not so much on long distance endurance. I have to admit I think the furthest I've ever run in my life is about 4 miles and I don't have much interest in doing more than that.

12:51 pm - Cobbler?
Is there a right way to make Peach Cobbler? For a technique that is literally "throw some fruit and topping together and see what happens" can there really be a right answer?

No. But I've been making this one and it does just fine.

I'm too lazy to post... so let's go lightening round:

1) I've been in Aberdeen, MD for the last week at a DARPA project evaluation. Bad food, sleep deprivation, and nerve-wracking demos make it not much fun, but I did see three red foxes at the base, so that was kind of cool. I also got mostly-good sweet at a Cracker Barrel and mostly-whoa sweet tea at a McDonalds.

2) I finished reading the entire six-year archive of Girl Genius this week, after a recent reminder of it's existence. I remember reading parts of it years ago, but the story has really come along. It's basically a healthy dose of steam-punk mad science with a buxom female lead. What's not to love?

3) Getting married in like T-minus 2 weeks. Oh shit.

4) I've gotten good traction with http://onebusaway.org/ , the updated set of tools that I developed for real-time bus arrival for Metro King County transit users. Getting a couple hundred users every day and lots of good feedback. Still working on my next secret project though...
